NIRSA Region 1 Family,

As I have reflected over the past few weeks, knowing my time as Region 1 Representative was coming to an end, ultimately, I am confident and excited of what is to come.  I know that I will continue to serve wherever I am and advocate for mid-managers, aspiring directors and students at the brink of entering our field.  And, though there is a tug of sadness that I will not be doing so in this position, I have no doubt that Jessica Ward, Incoming Region 1 Representative will take the region to the next level and do an outstanding job as our representative.

The familiar saying, “It takes a village…” resounds in my mind.  I continue to be grateful and motivated by those who have supported our Region 1 village in these past two years: Zach Watson, Matt Grimm, Christine Dias, Kevin George, Scott Haines, Scott Nalette, Perry Karnofsky, and Jill Harper.  Also, a big debt of pride goes to our 3 amazing Region 1 Student Leaders:  Andrew Doyle, Megan Silvey, and Pat Shank who were constantly by my side, communicating, coordinating and collaborating.

Our village of servant leaders is so vast and was able to be productive through our Region 1 committees and work teams, so a big shout out to you all!

To the Member Network, the heartbeat. You are all vital to NIRSA and I have been inspired to approach collegiate recreation and my daily job with a fresh perspective.  It has been such an honor to work alongside an amazing group of professionals and I look forward to our time at a future NIRSA conference.

Lastly, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to my UMD RecWell family for your support over the past two years.  Especially to my supervisor, Barb Aiken, and to our Director, Jay Gilchrist for their encouragement in allowing me to serve in this role.

Thank you all for your kind gestures throughout my two years as your Region 1 Representative.  I look forward to reconnecting with you all in the near future.

PEACE, LOVE, & NIRSA

Be well,

Earl Cabellon
